"Death and the Maiden"

With the Malion-Quartett, Frankfurt

String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, op. posth., "Death and the Maiden", composed in 1824 by Franz Schubert after the poem of the same name by Matthias Claudius.

The string quartet composed in 1824 is characteristic of Schubert's path towards a "rebirth of chamber music from the spirit of song". As early as 1817 he composed the song on which the slow movement of the string quartet is based.

This existential theme is impressively presented in the triad of poet's word, music and reverse glass painting. Taking part are:

Helena Donie (mezzo-soprano), Ulrike Meyer (piano and picture interpretation), Andreas Kammenos (moderation).

"At a time when young string quartets are springing up in great numbers, the Malion Quartett occupies a special position" - with these words the legendary pianist Alfred Brendel describes the Malion Quartett, founded in Frankfurt am Main in 2018, which today ranks among the most versatile ensembles on the international music scene.

In 2025 the Malion-Quartett was awarded 2nd prize at the 10th International JOSEPH JOACHIM Chamber Music Competition in Weimar.
