My Heart Swims in Tears

Suffering, comfort and hope in the musical mirror of the centuries

In this programme, Passion arias by Johann Sebastian Bach meet songs by C. Ph. Bach, Schubert, Schumann, Hindemith and Ilse Weber. The music tells of pain and grief, of inner turmoil and quiet confidence – from the baroque Passion through the Romantic landscape of the soul to the harrowing testimonies of the 20th century. It asks the questions: is suffering part of life – and how do we meet such existential experiences? A concert in which heart and history meet in sound.

Magdalena Wolfarth (piano) and Julia Obert (soprano) form a song duo that combines curiosity, sensitivity to sound and clarity of shaping. In their programmes, familiar works meet rarely heard pieces; finely illuminated nuances, lyrical vocal artistry and narrative piano playing shape their music-making together. The result is a world of sound shared as equals, in which song shines out in all its diversity.
