"The Calm after the Storm"

Music of the 17th and 18th centuries with the Cappella della lettera

When Antonio Vivaldi, the legendary composer of the "Four Seasons", completed his flute concerto "La tempesta di mare" (Eng.: Thunderstorm at Sea) around the year 1717, he probably did not know that with this work he had composed a kind of mirror of his time.

A time that is known today under the umbrella term "Baroque" and that really was stormy. One in which practically every generation and every region was visited by upheavals, turning points and crises of all kinds, not to mention the wars, famines or diseases that stand in the history books today. But also a time in which the human being was understood as an emotional and passionate personality, within whom storms too could rage.

Against this background, the longing for calm, eternal beauty and inner stillness found expression above all in the arts and in music. Where words reached their limits, notes took their place.

The "Cappella della Lettera" has made it its task to carry these notes into the here and now. Three musicians who, impressed by the contrasts and the common ground between the 18th and the 21st century, draw parallels in their interpretations, rehearse baroque music on historically styled instruments and present it in its original sound during the concert evening. In this way not only a journey through time in sound succeeds, but also a timeless understanding of feelings and events from 1650 to 2026.

The concert evening features not only Vivaldi's "La tempesta die mare", but also music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Händel, François Couperin and other contemporaries. Anyone interested is invited to get to know the programme and the instruments in an introduction by the musicians at 16:00.

School pupils have free admission to the concert.
